PRESS STATEMENT

UGOM COMMUNITY UNDER SIEGE—AN URGENT CRY FOR PROTECTION, JUSTICE, AND HUMANITARIAN AID

Ugom Community is under Maro ward, Kajuru LGA, Kaduna State, Nigeria.

6th November, 2025

For almost a decade, the people of Ugom Community have lived under a brutal and unrelenting siege. Armed attackers—Fulani terrorists—have unleashed waves of terror upon our peaceful villages, cutting off access to markets, schools, and medical care, and turning daily life into a nightmare of fear and survival. This sustained campaign of violence has left families starving, sick, and trapped on their ancestral lands with nowhere to turn.

Those who refused to abandon the land entrusted to them by God now live in constant danger. Many have been forced to shelter in buses or hide in compounds for months, unable to travel even short distances to buy food, medicine, or other basic necessities. The attackers have encircled our settlements so effectively that people cannot leave or return safely. Markets lie beyond reach. Fields lie untilled. Children cry from hunger. The elderly and nursing mothers are wasting away. The silence of those in authority has become deafening — and deadly.

Today’s atrocity is the most devastating yet. Brave, unarmed youths and elders—attempting to escort villagers safely to a nearby market—were ambushed. The attackers opened fire on our unarmed people. One of our beloved sons, Mr Jonah Na’allah Yunana, was murdered in cold blood by their gunshots. Another sustained severe gunshot wounds and is currently receiving treatment in the hospital. Our community is reeling from grief, fear, and outrage. The killing of Mr Jonah is not just a tragedy—it is an atrocity that cries out for immediate investigation, justice, and accountability.

We have repeatedly and urgently appealed for protection—calling for a military outpost and immediate security reinforcement—yet our cries have been met with silence. Each day of inaction endangers more lives and pushes us closer to extinction. We cannot and will not stand by while our people are driven from their homes, starved, or slaughtered. The blood of our innocent sons and daughters will not be forgotten.

Therefore, on behalf of the Ugom Progressive Union and the entire Ugom Community, we make the following solemn demands:

1. Immediate Security Deployment:

Federal and state security agencies should urgently deploy adequate forces to Ugom and neighbouring communities, establish a permanent security presence, and secure safe corridors to markets, hospitals, and other essential services.

We also call upon local, national, and international media, human rights organisations, and faith-based institutions to raise their voices for Ugom—to amplify our plight, mobilize emergency humanitarian assistance, and mount political pressure on those who can act but have chosen to remain silent.

This statement is issued with heavy hearts and unbroken resolve. We are not calling for revenge—we are crying for protection, justice, and the preservation of human life. The people of Ugom are peaceful farmers, traders, parents, and elders who ask for nothing more than the right to live safely on their land and provide for their children. They must not be abandoned.

We call on every Nigerian and every person of conscience across the world: Do not look away. Do not stay silent.

Delay means more death, more displacement, and the irreversible destruction of an entire community.

Signed,

Alhaji Ishaya Onnusim

Chairman, Ugom Progressive Union
