Troops of the 159 Military Battalion in Kanamma have thwarted an attempted operation by suspected ISWAP insurgents who targeted a primary school in Ngamma village, Yunusari Local Government Area of Yobe State.
According to security sources, the incident occurred around 9:00 p.m. on February 9, when armed attackers stormed Ngamma Primary School and allegedly forced local youths to assist them in removing roofing zinc from the building. The assailants were said to be carrying sophisticated weapons and appeared organised in their operation.
Military personnel were immediately deployed after receiving intelligence about the attack. Upon arrival, troops engaged the insurgents, disrupting the operation and preventing further damage to the school property.
During the exchange, a stray bullet struck a 19-year-old resident, Umar Maigari, injuring his left leg. He was quickly evacuated to the Specialist Hospital in Geidam, where medical officials confirmed he is responding well to treatment.
Security authorities say the situation is now under control, and monitoring as well as intelligence-gathering operations have been intensified in the area to prevent further incursions.
The incident underscores ongoing security challenges in parts of northeastern Nigeria, where insurgent groups continue to target civilian infrastructure, including schools, as part of their disruptive campaign.
