Panic and grief have gripped the Awon community following a deadly kidnapping attack that unfolded on the morning of April 20, 2026. Around 9:00 a.m., armed assailants stormed the area, abducting residents and killing two people in the chaos.
Initial reports indicated that seven individuals had been taken. However, as families began to account for their loved ones in the aftermath, it has now been confirmed that 11 people were kidnapped.
The victims identified earlier include Gift Victor, Hannatu Yusuf, Celina Sam, Silvia Sam, Dogarah Maisamari, Hassana Bulus, and Joy Samaila.
Additional names confirmed later are Yusuf Bawa, Divine Sunday, Faith Kefas, and Gaius Yusuf.
Witnesses say the attack triggered widespread panic, forcing many residents to flee into nearby bushes for safety. As a result, some individuals remain unaccounted for, raising fears that the number of victims could still rise.
The incident underscores the growing insecurity affecting communities like Awon and neighbouring Ariko, where residents continue to live under the constant threat of violence and abduction.
As families search for answers and cling to hope, calls are growing louder for urgent action to protect vulnerable communities and bring those responsible to justice.
